Urban education

  • The Center for Urban Education at UC Berkeley researches ways to improve the quality of education for students in low-income urban areas, and promotes dialogue between UC researchers and school practitioners about strategies to improve urban schools.
  • Center X at UCLA works to strengthen education for the children of Los Angeles by conducting applied research and providing professional development.
  • The Urban Education Studies Center (UESC) at UCLA provides a unique setting where nationally recognized scholars and researchers collaborate with teachers and administrators to resolve cultural, economic, and language challenges facing America's public schools.
  • The Center for the Study of Urban Poverty (CSUP) at UCLA sponsors collaborative research on issues of urban poverty and social welfare, disseminates study results to local policy makers, and offers research training for UC students.

Effective teaching practices

  • The New Teacher Center (NTC) at UC Santa Cruz is dedicated to teacher development and new teacher training and support.
  • UC Education Research Center, located at UC Merced's center in Fresno, sponsors research on teaching practices, teacher professional development, and program evaluation in the Central Valley.
  • The Gevirtz Research Center at UC Santa Barbara designs, implements, and studies the effectiveness of innovative programs that provide students with high-quality educational experiences.

Health and well-being of children and families

Education Policy

  • The Policy Analysis for California Education (PACE), sponsored by the Schools of Education at UC Berkeley and Stanford University, provides analysis, research and assistance to California policymakers, education professionals, and the general public on issues facing California's K-12 education system.
  • The California Policy Resource Center, administered by the UC Office of the President and located in Berkeley, works to apply the extensive research expertise of the UC system to state and federal policy issues such as K-12 education.
