Tutoring, mentoring, test preparation, and other special academic support and enrichment programs

  • The University of California Early Academic Outreach Program (EAOP) counsels and tutors students, advises families and educators, and offers academic support programs to ensure that qualified students take the appropriate pre-college courses and are better prepared to take standardized tests for college eligibility.

  • Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) prepares and encourages students in math, science, engineering, and technology to attend college and become technology professionals.

  • Puente helps educationally underserved students succeed academically, enroll in college, and return to the community as mentors and leaders; it has both high school and community college programs.

  • The UC College Prep (UCCP), based at UC Santa Cruz, program provides Advanced Placement and honors courses on the Internet, so that more students are competitive in their applications to UC and other universities.

  • To help prepare students for college level composition exams, UC and the California State University have jointly developed the Diagnostic Writing Service, a web-based composition support service for eleventh grade students and teachers.

  • UC Links (510/643-7349), a multi-campus program, provides access to quality after-school care and technology-based educational activities and resources for low-income youth and their families. UC Links also fosters teachers' use of new technologies for teaching and learning.

  • UC ArtsBridge, based at UC Irvine, connects with California public schools to provide art, dance, drama, and music education.

  • The Los Angeles Basin Initiative (LABI) offers a wide range of summer/intersession academic enrichment and professional development programs to high school and middle school students, teachers, and counselors from Los Angeles County.

  • UC LEADS (562/728-8732) provides undergraduates at each UC campus with mentoring, academic enrichment, and skills training to prepare for graduate study.

  • The SAGE Scholars program (510/987-9100), on the UC Irvine and UC Berkeley (510/642-2325) campuses, provides comprehensive multi-year paid internships, extensive mentoring, workshops and financial support to promising, economically disadvantaged students during college.

UC Admissions and application information

  • PATHWAYS, the undergraduate admission information and application network, enables students to submit their applications electronically to UC campuses.

  • ASSIST, a statewide electronic advising system based at UC Irvine, provides information to community college students about transferring to UC and to the California State University.
Educators

Opportunities for prospective teachers

  • The Teacher Scholars Program offers a combined master's degree and certificate program for teachers.
  • Teacher intern programs through University Extension at the Berkeley and UCLA campuses provide opportunities to teach on an emergency credential while completing a credential program.

Statewide teacher professional development opportunities

In partnership with the California State University and California's independent colleges and universities, UC administers several statewide programs:
  • The California Consortium for the Advancement of Teaching and Professional Development (510/987-9489) is an umbrella organization that coordinates and links statewide teacher professional development efforts.
  • The California Subject Matter Projects (CSMPs) offer ongoing professional development for teachers throughout the state, with a focus on teachers in low-performing schools in nine major subject areas: Arts, Foreign Languages, History-Social Sciences, Mathematics, Physical Education-Health, Reading and Literature, Science, and Writing.
  • The California Professional Development Institutes offer summer and intersession institutes with academic year follow up activities in early elementary reading, elementary mathematics, algebra and high school mathematics, high school writing and composition, and instruction for English language learners.

Professional development opportunities for principals

School & Community Partnerships

School/University partnerships: UC campuses are establishing long-term partnerships with local high schools and their feeder schools to strengthen the school's academic program and to help more students become eligible for college. In this systemwide initiative, UC campuses are also mobilizing student preparation programs and professional development opportunities for teachers and administrators.

Community collaboration: Partnerships with local neighborhoods and communities help improve the academic achievement of all students.

  • The Urban Community School Collaborative works to create and sustain collaborative relationships between UC campuses, local community-based organizations, school districts, and other agencies and institutions throughout the state.
Educational Research

Educational equity

  • UC All Campus Collaborative on Outreach Research, and Dissemination (UC ACCORD, 831/459-3850) builds on existing faculty expertise and research to address critical problems of education and equity.
  • The Presidential Grants in Education (PGE) program, based in UC's systemwide Office of the President, sponsors a competitive grants program that promotes applied research collaborations among UC and K-12 faculty.

Education Policy

  • The California Policy Resource Center, administered by the UC Office of the President and located in Berkeley, works to apply the extensive research expertise of the UC system to state and federal policy issues such as K-12 education.

  • The UC Natural Reserve System, which manages 33 diverse wildland sites across California, provides wide-ranging K-12 activities at natural reserves including class field trips, student internships, and a summer field school.

  • Boletines en español es un programa de información en español localizado en el campus de la Universidad de California en Riverside que prepara boletines y cápsulas informativas en español mensualmente. (The Spanish Bulletins Program located at UC Riverside prepares weekly news bulletins for the Spanish-speaking community.)
