Opportunities for prospective teachers

  • The Teacher Scholars Program offers a combined master's degree and certificate program for teachers.
  • Teacher intern programs through University Extension at the Berkeley and UCLA campuses provide opportunities to teach on an emergency credential while completing a credential program.

Statewide teacher professional development opportunities

In partnership with the California State University and California's independent colleges and universities, UC administers several statewide programs:
  • The California Consortium for the Advancement of Teaching and Professional Development (510/987-9489) is an umbrella organization that coordinates and links statewide teacher professional development efforts.
  • The California Subject Matter Projects (CSMPs) offer ongoing professional development for teachers throughout the state, with a focus on teachers in low-performing schools in nine major subject areas: Arts, Foreign Languages, History-Social Sciences, Mathematics, Physical Education-Health, Reading and Literature, Science, and Writing.
  • The California Professional Development Institutes offer summer and intersession institutes with academic year follow up activities in early elementary reading, elementary mathematics, algebra and high school mathematics, high school writing and composition, and instruction for English language learners.
