AFTRA Policy on Digital Audition/Resume and Amateur Digital Projects for Exhibition in New Media

A digital audition/resume is a project produced by an individual to showcase that individual’s talent. An amateur digital project is a recording of a personal unscripted event, such as a wedding, birthday party, or other occasion, in which an individual participates.

AFTRA members may perform in or produce their own digital audition/resume or an amateur digital project for exhibition in New Media without an AFTRA Agreement provided the following criteria are met:

1. A Request for Information form must be completed and sent to AFTRA. Click here for form.

2. Use of the digital audition/resume or amateur digital project is personal and non-commercial in nature.

3. Use of the digital audition/resume is limited to securing employment in the same manner as traditional auditions or resumes are used.

4. No one connected with the digital audition/resume or amateur digital project will receive any economical benefits or compensation whatsoever.

5. The digital audition/resume may be used on the website(s) of the AFTRA member or their agents or other representatives, as well as new media platforms such as YouTube, MySpace, and similar websites where there is no fee to the viewer.

6. The amateur digital project may be used on the website(s) of AFTRA member or other participants in the project, as well as new media platforms such as YouTube, MySpace, and similar websites where there is no fee to the viewer.

Notwithstanding the foregoing, all other projects produced for New Media—including dramas and sitcoms, news and informational productions, and all other similar type programs—are AFTRA-covered work and would be subject to the AFTRA Electronic Media Agreement for Entertainment Programming, AFTRA Electronic Media Agreement for News/Information, or other applicable AFTRA agreement.

In the new digital media, AFTRA guarantees that you are covered under a union contract that provides minimum rates, timely payment, safe working conditions, and health and retirement benefits.

Before you’re engaged to render services on programs for cell phones, podcasts, the Internet, or other new media platforms, call your local AFTRA office to determine what contract covers your job. Your AFTRA representative will work with the producer to sign the appropriate AFTRA agreement.
