We Remember Rich Holter

Posted December 15, 2011

Twin Cities AFTRA member Rich Holter died Nov. 30 at the age of 72.

Holter had an impressive career in broadcast that spanned more than three decades in the upper Midwest. He was an award-winning broadcast journalist at AFTRA-station WCCO-AM where he served as the AFTRA shop steward and chief negotiator. He was especially remembered as the leader of a successful unit-wide AFTRA work action in support of striking IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electric Workers) at WCCO in 1979.

Holter was immensely devoted to his union. He joined AFTRA in 1964 and held many offices including Local and National Board member, President and 1st Vice President of the Twin Cities Local, as well as National Vice President of AFTRA. He was a founding member of the AFTRA Foundation, and was honored with the AFTRA Gold Card in 1999.

Twin Cities Local Executive Director Colleen Aho reflects upon Holter’s legacy. “It was my privilege to work with Rich for many years, both at the AFTRA bargaining table and internally within our union. He was a genuine natural leader, not afraid to stand up for what was right,” states Aho. “He commanded respect. Yet he was also kind, respectful and completely approachable. Rich was the real deal, and I am grateful to have the memories of time shared working with him.”

Holter is survived by his wife Sandra; daughter, Lori Bergan; son, Scott Holter; son, Drake Holter and six grandchildren.
