AFTRA partnered with the Paley Center for Media on Feb. 11 for an evening with author and broadcaster Tavis Smiley in honor of Black History Month.
The event was the brainchild of AFTRA'a Equal Employment Opportunities Committee as part of AFTRA's "Spotlight On..." series, which serves to shed light on union members whose work has helped to enrich our community and industry.
Interviewed by broadcaster and CEO of the The Paley Center for Media, Pat Mitchell, Smiley moved the packed audience with both the personal narrative of his career trajectory, as well as his anecdotal observations of the hundreds of guests he's had on his award-winning PBS program, "The Tavis Smiley Show."
On behalf of the union, AFTRA Local President Ron Morgan presented Smiley with an acclamation from the Los Angeles local in recognition of his contributions to broadcasting.
