Labor Mobilizes for Performance Rights Act

AFTRA National President Roberta Reardon joined lawmakers as well as AFL-CIO President Rich Trumka, AFM President Tom Lee and AFTRA member Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul and Mary to outline a new mobilization effort aimed at building support for workers’ rights for performers.

The effort includes an aggressive new outreach campaign in the following states: New York, Minnesota, Ohio, Wisconsin, Iowa, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Georgia, Michigan, Florida, and others.

"For more than 80 years now, recording artists, including the late great Frank Sinatra, have asked for a performance right for the use of their music on the radio. We and our fellow union members at the American Federation of Musicians have led the fight for a performance right for nearly four decades and we have at the forefront of every legislative effort to amend the Copyright Act to create a performance right in sound recordings," Reardon said. "To us, it's only fair that performers, like all other American workers, should have the right to be compensated for their work when it is used by others."
