Additional Information Re: Security Breach to 'Join Online'

Posted October 01, 2010

We have received inquiries from members asking for more information about the “Join Online” security breach. We are, of course, angry and frustrated that despite extensive security protocols and encryption of necessary data, sophisticated hackers attacked the AFTRA "Join Online" site. The unlawful security breach of the AFTRA "Join Online" website is being thoroughly investigated by AFTRA and by state and federal law enforcement authorities. In order to avoid compromising the current investigation by law enforcement, AFTRA cannot comment on certain inquiries until those investigations have been completed.

Please be advised, however, that AFTRA has taken immediate steps to ensure that membership data is secure, confirm that no other section of the AFTRA site has been compromised, advise members of the situation and provide them with resources and counsel to assist them with their security concerns. AFTRA is also complying with all legal and reporting obligations. As more information is gathered, AFTRA will take appropriate measures to assist members who may have questions and will disseminate information accordingly.

Any questions should be directed to Sarah Tarlow, AFTRA Assistant General Counsel, in the AFTRA National Legal Department at 212.863.4230, or by email at starlow@aftra.com.
