The Office of Research and Graduate Studies seeks to promote and advance graduate education at the University of California through strategic planning, outreach and coordination. This includes the development of graduate research and preparation opportunities within system-wide initiatives and programs. The Director of Graduate Studies works closely with the Council of Graduate Deans, Graduate Division Staff at the UC campuses and within the Office of the President to facilitate and plan initiatives and programs across the University of California system. These efforts seek to:
- Promote greater understanding of UC graduate education
- Highlight the impact of UC graduate research and education
- Help facilitate graduate student financial support efforts and analyses and advocate on behalf of this critical area
- Promote or coordinate policy, planning and analyses of a range of graduate education issues in support of maintaining or enhancing the outstanding graduate education enterprise of UC
- Increase the diversity of graduate student and postdoctoral scholar populations at UC

, Director of Graduate Studies, joined the University of California Office of Research & Graduate Studies in 2009. She comes to the Office of the President from California College of the Arts (CCA), where she has served as Vice President for Student Affairs. She has also served many years of distinguished leadership in graduate studies at UC Berkeley.
