Description: The Advanced Visualization Laboratory’s (AVL) mission is to communicate science, inspiring audiences to learn about scientific concepts through capturing the thrill of scientific discovery and wonder of complex systems. Working in close collaboration with domain scientists, AVL creates high-resolution, cinematic, data-driven scientific visualizations. These visualizations provide insight into computational science—a key method of contemporary science–since they are based on supercomputer-generated models of scientific theories about natural phenomenon that are so advanced they could not be brought to the public in any other way. AVL shares its work with the world through shows featured in digital full-dome planetariums, IMAX theaters, and documentary television. In order to perform this cyberoutreach, AVL develops and uses a unique cyberinfrastructure, which includes visualization pipelines built from customized software and hardware elements. At AVL, we are continually advancing our capabilities through developing new cybertechnologies, advanced visualization tools, and software production methods. The cyberinfrastructure we have developed and continues to grow is especially suited to the type of visualization in which we specialize: the cosmos and the climate. Each member of the AVL team plays a unique role and contributes a variety of skills to the process, development, and production. Our expertise includes advanced graphics and visualization techniques, artistic design, cinematic choreography, multimedia and video production, and data management and render wrangling. The lab is part of the University of Illinois’s National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), which is dedicated to providing powerful computers and expert support to help thousands of scientists and engineers across the country improve our world.

Description: What you see within these pages is the essence of years of rigorous reviews, intensive requirements, and endless deadlines. These are the efforts/relics of the many highly motivated, independent-minded students who have a strong desire to make and challenge conventional ideas. This catalog is the celebration and calm after the storm. It is where art historians, art educators, designers, and artists present their labors to the broader community. It symbolizes the remains of that period of time before they transition to a career after Illinois. These artists, designers, scholars and educators will be the ones who will thoughtfully challenge the prevailing conventions of artistic expression, develop new forms, and become innovators and leaders in their chosen fields in response to the needs and values of a global society.

Description: University of Illinois Extension is the flagship outreach effort of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, offering educational programs to residents of all of Illinois’ 102 counties – and far beyond. Through learning partnerships that put knowledge to work, U of I Extension’s programs are aimed at making life better, healthier, safer and more profitable for individuals and their communities. The Center for Advanced BioEnergy Research (CABER) works closely with the nine University of Illinois colleges, multiple disciplinary and professional units and faculty and students to provide a facilitative structure for campus outreach, teaching and research in areas related to bioenergy systems. CABER facilitates the development of cross-disciplinary research and development, education and outreach programs that promote the greater and more efficient use of bio-renewable resources, and, more specifically, support the emergence of advanced bio-fuels and chemicals. CABER focuses on sustainable bioenergy systems, including plant, microbial, downstream processing and economics and policy issues as they relate to bio-based products. CABER provides a platform for promoting national and international visibility of all University of Illinois faculty involved with bioenergy research, teaching and outreach. As such, CABER enhances opportunities for external funding and promotes scholarship. CABER is partnered with a variety of scientists from a host of different disciplines, including faculty in the University of Illinois Colleges of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences, Liberal Arts and Sciences, Engineering, and the Institute of Genomic Biology.

Description: Illinois has strong albeit dispersed research programs focused on biomedical health issues. Thus, focusing the University of Illinois' research expertise to health challenges requires a new, innovative research paradigm. Towards that end, the Division of Biomedical Sciences was created to align and coordinate biomedical research activities across campus and promote partnerships between campus researchers and external strategic partners in clinical and health fields. Basic, engineering and applied health science expertise at Illinois will yield promising outcome-based health solutions through aligned and focused research and training efforts. Bringing these solutions to the clinic and community requires rapid and flexible responses, addressing demanding regulatory environments, and creating highly functional links between laboratory-based research and clinical application.

Description: The Airport Safety Management Program (ASMP) is one of the focus research areas of the Center of Excellence for Airport Technology (CEAT) at the University of Illinois. In 1999 the FAA's Center of Excellence Office approached the University of Illinois' Center of Excellence (known then as the Center of Excellence for Airport Pavement Research) with a request to provide assistance in addressing wildlife issues at airports. Avoiding collisions between birds and aircraft was the focus of wildlife management and birdstrike hazard warning systems that were in early stages of development at that time. That assistance was provided in the first projects in what is now the ASMP. In 2001, the University of Illinois COE changed its name to the Center of Excellence for Airport Technology (CEAT) to include its broader areas of research topics, such as wildlife management.
