Description: Gensuikyo was formed in 1955 at the height of anti-nuclear-testing movement in Japan. While the group protests nuclear warfare and advocates for the human rights of atomic bomb and nuclear testing victims, its reluctance to support a comprehensive ban on nuclear armament and unwillingness to renounce non-arms use of nuclear energy led to the separation and formation of another organization, Gensuikin, in 1965. Since its founding Gensuikyo has developed many forms of action to achieve three basic goals: 1) the prevention of nuclear war, 2) a ban on and the elimination of nuclear weapons, 3) relief for and solidarity with the Hibakusha, the A-bomb sufferers, through the annual World Conference Against A & H Bombs, which takes place every August, constant and nationwide signature campaigns for a ban on nuclear weapons, and other events and actions in cooperation with the Hibakusha to publicize the damage and health effects of the A-bombings to the general public.

Description: This website aims to introduce you to the Japanese “Slow Living Movement.” In July 1999, ten or so people got together in Tokyo and started the Sloth Club. It became a catalyst of the so-called “Slow Life” movement in Japan, whose creed is “slow is beautiful." Some ten years later, the Sloth Club still exists and the word “slow” has become widely recognized. Slow can be understood to mean alternative, sustainable, ecological, local, and happy. Slow means “to connect”," with other people, with nature, etc. In the last ten years, we have witnessed positive changes all over Japan. The concept of slow has made an impact on many aspects of the society. The movement, for example, encouraged people to start acknowledging the richness of rural life and communities. Many like-minded groups have also formed to address issues as diverse as nuclear disarmament, peace between Japan and Korea, decentralization, and pollution. The movement as a whole is creating a new sustainable and ecological culture.

Description: Rural decline is a common phenomenon in urbanizing and developed countries. The Village Action Movement in Finland demonstrates that this is not an inevitable conclusion. 2800 villages, affecting the lives of 500,000 people have undertaken to make their villages viable and vibrant communities through projects of culture, leisure, communications, services, housing and economic development. They have overcome passivity, re-evaluated their priorities and chosen to emphasize their culture and build a rural lifestyle which is self-reliant and community based. The Village Action Association of Finland (in Finnish: Suomen Kylätoiminta ry or SYTY) promotes and develops village action and locally initiated rural development on the national level. The Village Action Association of Finland is an umbrella organisation for regional actors in rural development. Residents' Associations, village coalitions, LAGs and national central organisations are members of the Village Action Association. 2013 the Association has more than 130 member organisations.

In March 2008 the Ministry for Rural Affairs and the Environment signed a management agreement with Koperattiva Rurali Manikata whereby KRM Ltd. will gradually restore the place called Ir- Razzett tal- Qasam. It is being converted into a services center for the members of the cooperative as well as for students, families and tourists who visit our fields. Today the cooperative is working on four projects: management of the Rural Heritage Trail; restoration of the Razzett tal-Qasam; restoration of the Armoury; and the promotion of local produce and typical food.

The SEU was established in 1988 as a voluntary association of environmental groups active at regional, city, and district levels, and of various legal status's. These groups are extremely diverse, from teams of radical environmental activists to associations of environmentally-minded officials; from nature-clubs for school children to independent research laboratories; from societies of victims of radioactive pollution to conservation organisations planning national parks. The members are united by devotion to practical environmental action, a spirit of openness, cooperation and freedom of information, and the deep belief that we have one planet and the environment cannot be divided by national borders. The SEU's activities include: Environmental monitoring: Radiological monitoring in regions surrounding military plants and cities; Dioxin-pollution monitoring in regions surrounding paper-plants, and chemical-pollution monitoring in several regions of Russia and Uzbekistan; and Monitoring the management of boreal forests by Russian and multinational timber companies; Protection of biological diversity and the management of protected areas: A Bio-diversity Conservation Centre (BCC) programme was designed to facilitate long-term survival of nature reserves in the CIS countries; The first private nature reserve was established in Amur region to save nesting habitat of rare crane species; and Designated and established many protected areas. Non-governmental environmental-impact assessments of several energy projects were managed by SEU experts. The SEU is also active in environmental education, sustainable development issues, environmental aspects of local self-government, development of new environmentally sound technologies, and military conversion issues, among others.
