Description: Gensuikyo was formed in 1955 at the height of anti-nuclear-testing movement in Japan. While the group protests nuclear warfare and advocates for the human rights of atomic bomb and nuclear testing victims, its reluctance to support a comprehensive ban on nuclear armament and unwillingness to renounce non-arms use of nuclear energy led to the separation and formation of another organization, Gensuikin, in 1965. Since its founding Gensuikyo has developed many forms of action to achieve three basic goals: 1) the prevention of nuclear war, 2) a ban on and the elimination of nuclear weapons, 3) relief for and solidarity with the Hibakusha, the A-bomb sufferers, through the annual World Conference Against A & H Bombs, which takes place every August, constant and nationwide signature campaigns for a ban on nuclear weapons, and other events and actions in cooperation with the Hibakusha to publicize the damage and health effects of the A-bombings to the general public.
