Title: Forum on the Future of Public Education, College of Education

URL: https://forum.illinois.edu/

Collection: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Web Archives

Description: The Forum on the Future of Public Education strives to bring the best empirical evidence to policymakers and the public. The Forum draws on a network of premier scholars to create, interpret, and disseminate credible information on key questions facing P-20 education. The Forum pursues original research and facilitates collaboration between researchers and policymakers to examine the pressing issues shaping the future of public education. Key constituencies of the Forum include scholars who influence research, policy and practice; policy makers and policy making bodies at all levels; members of the media who influence public opinion; foundations, organizations, business groups and others who support, criticize and advocate for reform; and citizens who make choices about education for themselves and their children. America is witnessing a drastic redefinition of the policies and practices associated with “public education.” Too often, discussions around the future of public education are strong on passion but short on actual evidence. The Forum for the Future of Public Education is filing that gap by building a resource of objective, research-based insights on key educational issues. We are establishing an open venue- a true public forum to debate controversial and consequential policy issues that will shape American’s future.

Description: Across the nation, there is great concern about the growing need for well-educated plant breeders to meet the demands of industry, academia, and government. Currently, U.S. academic institutions are graduating fewer than two-third the number of the entry-level M.S./Ph.D. plant breeders needed per year to fill the nation’s job vacancies. Several major companies are reporting difficulty in recruiting sufficiently qualified personnel for plant breeding positions. In response to this need, in 2008 the Department of Crop Sciences, together with faculty from the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences, established the Illinois Plant Breeding Center as part of the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences at the University of Illinois. Recently, at least three of the largest seed companies in the U.S. announced plans to double research outputs in the next five years. This will require major expansion in the workforce, further increasing the demand for new M.S./ Ph.D. plant breeders.

As more and more opportunities are being offered by the College of Business and the campus, there is little excuse for graduates in today's job market to lack exposure to the international business environment. Developing an understanding of the world beyond the boundaries of the United States is an advantage to anyone in a business career, which is why the College of Business has a goal of having 100% study abroad participation. Did you know that for most of the College of Business semester programs, you would pay Range IV tuition instead of the regular full price of tuition? Studying in another country might be cheaper than you realized. If you normally pay out-of-state tuition, there are definitely options through the College of Business that will be cheaper than a semester at UIUC. There are many opportunities for College of Business students to study abroad. Students have the option of studying abroad for a few weeks, a summer, a semester, or the entire academic year. In addition to programs sponsored by the College of Business, the University of Illinois has hundreds off study abroad options to choose from.
