Title: American Rights at Work - Home

URL: http://www.americanrightsatwork.org/

Collection: Tamiment-Wagner: Labor Unions and Organizations (U.S.)

Description: Since 2003, American Rights at Work has informed the American public about the struggle to win workplace democracy for nurses, cooks, computer programmers, retail cashiers, and a variety of workers who we all depend on every day. Our vision is a nation where the freedom of workers to organize unions and bargain collectively with employers is guaranteed and promoted. Through coalition-building, research, public relations, policy analysis, and advocacy, we: Investigate and expose workers' rights abuses and the inadequacy of U.S. labor law,; Stimulate debate about the state of workers' rights among journalists, policymakers, advocacy groups, and the public; Promote public policy that protects workers from hostile employers and weak laws that impede their rights to form unions and collectively bargain; Publicize success stories of profitable companies and public agencies that respect workers’ rights and build innovative partnerships with unions. Resources: Publications: We produce timely reports, case studies, issue briefs, and educational materials based on our original research; Workers’ Rights Clearinghouse: Our national database features cases of workers whose rights have been violated during union organizing campaigns or contract negotiations with employers; Workers’ Rights Watch: Eye on the NLRB: This feature monitors and analyzes decisions of the National Labor Relations Board, just one of the ways we demonstrate the inadequacy of the current labor law system; Online Advocacy & Resources: Our website is the place to find the latest news, action alerts, reports, and other helpful resources for those who want to learn more about our issues or ways to get involved in defending the right of workers to organize.

Title: LabourStart (USA): Where trade unionists start their day on the net. 2

URL: http://www.labourstart.org/cgi-bin/show_news.pl?country=USA

Collection: Tamiment-Wagner: Labor Unions and Organizations (U.S.)

Description: This site is the U.S. news portion of LabourStart is an online news service maintained by a global network of volunteers which aims to serve the international trade union movement by collecting and disseminating information -- and by assisting unions in campaigning and other ways. Its features include daily labour news links in more than 20 languages and a news syndication service used by more than over 700 trade union websites. News is collected from mainstream, trade union, and alternative news sources by a network of over 500 volunteer correspondents based on every continent. LabourStart has been involved in online campaigning for several years but moved up a gear with the launch in July 2002 of the ActNOW campaigning system. Tens of thousands of trade unionists have participated in its various online campaigns and more than 50,000 are currently subscribed to its mailing list. They receive weekly mailings, usually on Thursdays. Its founding editor is Eric Lee. Here are full contact details -- including email addresses, PGP public key, Instant Messaging for all the major services, and, yes, even a phone number. LabourStart grew out of the website created in 1996 to accompany the publication of Lee's book, The Labour Movement and the Internet: The New Internationalism. By late 1997, it was running daily labour news from South Korea; in March 1998 that was expanded to included labour news from around the world, and the site was renamed LabourStart. From July 1998 until December 2002, LabourStart was a project of Labour and Society International (LSI).

URL: http://www.workinglife.org/

Collection: Tamiment-Wagner: Labor Unions and Organizations (U.S.)

Description: Working Life is a growing community of people who want to discuss, share ideas and exchange information and stories about work, the economy and labor. We are building a community that communicates with the written word, audio and video. Vigorous opinions are encouraged. WorkingLife.org is a publication of, and the new web address of the The Labor Research Association (LRA), which was founded in 1927 to collect data on labor for trade unions and publish that information, statistics, and related news, and was for many years informally associated with the Communist Party USA. The Labor Research Association is a New York City-based non-profit research and advocacy organization that provides research and educational services for trade unions. Through its annual Labor Awards Dinners, LRA gives recognition to labor and political leaders who have made significant contributions to labor struggles. LRA's work is overseen by a Board of Directors composed of union leaders and others involved in the labor movement.

Title: Workers Solidarity Alliance, Workers' Solidarity Alliance

URL: https://workersolidarity.org/

Collection: Tamiment-Wagner: Anarchism

Description: Workers Solidarity Alliance is an anti-capitalist, anti-authoritarian organization of activists who believe that working people can build a new society and a better world based on the principles of solidarity and self-management. Our view is that such a society will be brought about only by working people building their own self-managed mass organizations from the ground up. Independent working class organization exists to some extent today in the form of rank-and-file committees, tenants unions, workers centers and other formations that might represent the forerunner of such a movement. We participate in current struggles and in the existing unions to fight for the rights of working people in the here and now, while working to build new, self-managed unions in the workplace and self-managed community organizations. In building organizations that are run directly by their membership, we not only create more effective organizations for fighting the bosses in day-to-day struggles, we will also be laying the foundation for a new society run by working people. We believe that the working class is in a prime position to overthrow the power of the bosses, given its essential economic role in society. It is we, the workers, who provide the capitalists with the skills, knowledge and labor that give them their profits. Without us, no plant or office could run, no ship could sail, no train could run, no periodical printed, no office cleaned, no document typed, no food produced, no food served. Without us, you could not use the internet. We see the fight against racism, gender inequality (patriarchy), and oppression of gay people as essential elements of the struggle for an egalitarian, self-managed society. Workers Solidarity Alliance is an anti-capitalist, anti-authoritarian organization of activists who believe that working people can build a new society and a better world based on the principles of solidarity and self-management. WSA also publishes ideas & action, which was created in July, 1981 as an independent anarcho-syndicalist semi-annual print magazine. After Workers Solidarity Alliance was founded in November, 1984, ideas & action became the magazine of WSA (with issue #5), and continuing through the publication of issue #17 in 1997. It now exists as a blog on the WSA website.
