Description: Two attributes that have been difficult to improve through traditional plant breeding efforts are milling yield and disease resistance to sheath blight, one of the most pervasive and destructive diseases of rice worldwide. The RiceCAP project aims to develop a set of biotechnology-based tools to improve these two attributes in U. S. rice varieties. The tools being developed will help rice researchers identify genes that control these important agronomic traits as well as determine their function in the rice plant. This biotechnology toolbox will allow traditional rice breeders to address problems that they have been unable to address adequately in the past.

Description: This project models the complex domain of healthcare logistics in the SL virtual world. We are investigating ubiquitous computing, location aware systems, RFID, massive use of sensors, smart devices, using natural language to talk to devices, workflows, ways of merging reality and virtual reality, and other technology ideas. The potential impact of testing these technologies in a simulated world before deploying in the real world could lower costs and accelerate the pace of technology change. Plus, its fun.

Description: Maritime and related multimodal transportation research is critical to the future of our transportation system and should be a national priority. Given the link between gross domestic product and international trade, which is expected to double over the next 30 years, efficient and resilient ports are critical to the nation’s overall economy and the ability of intermodal carriers to move freight between ports of entry and inland locations. Proximity to navigable waterways makes this consortium uniquely situated to address our theme. The MarTREC consortium consists of renowned maritime transportation researchers dedicated to transferrable research and inclusive education and workforce development.

Description: The Lyrique Quintette is the faculty woodwind chamber ensemble in residence at the University of Arkansas. All five are members of the music faculty at the University of Arkansas. A versatile troupe, the ensemble has been invited to perform throughout the U.S. and abroad. The members perform chamber music as chamber music should be heard--in an intimate, personal, and comfortable setting--bringing the performers and audience together as partners in the creation of an art form. The quintet's wide range of repertoire and dazzling performances make it a favorite of audiences of all ages. Repertoire spans many musical eras from the richness of the 16th-century Renaissance, to the boldness of 19th-century Romanticism, to works from some of today's most exciting international composers. Recently the quintet worked with bassoonist Mark Popkin in editing some exciting 19th-century chamber music which was then dedicated to each member. The ensemble is equally at home with its numerous "pop" arrangements by composers such as Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, and Duke Ellington.

We work with students from all degree programs and with alumni who choose to apply to medical school after graduation. We also advise students who have completed a bachelors degree at another institution but plan to attend the University of Arkansas to fulfill the requirements for medical school. Relevant information for all non-traditional returning students can be found under "Post-baccalaureate Premedical Advising".
