Description: The Diane D. Blair Center of Southern Politics and Society was established by an act of U. S. Congress in 2001, making it one of the rare research centers in the country to be established by congressional appropriation. Her career outside of teaching included extensive public service as chair of both the U. S. Corporation of Public Broadcasting and the Commission on Public Employee Rights. She was also a founding member of the University of Arkansas Press. In 1992, she joined the Clinton presidential campaign as a senior researcher, after which she was appointed a guest scholar at the Brookings Institute. She returned in 1996 as a senior advisor on the Clinton re-election team. Diane D. Blair was a champion of interdisciplinary research and critical thinking, and she reached across the academic aisles often and with ease. The Blair Center reflects her academic model and strives to approach the study of the American South from a variety of angles, attempting to reveal the undercurrents of politics, history, and culture that have shaped the region over time.

Title: Department of History

URL: http://history.uark.edu/

Description: History is the study of the past — both the official records of crowned rulers and sovereign states, as well as the vernacular accounts of those who have often been rendered, by presumption and sometimes violence, voiceless. It is the study, across time and place, of narratives and counter-narratives captured and preserved in a variety of “textual” sources — written, oral, and visual media; spontaneous actions, structured performances, and ritual enactments; sites and spaces, profane and sacred objects. It is the study of mass movements and isolated action, commodities and fads, production and reception, enslavement and liberation, sexuality and gender, art and obscenity, faith and heresy, empire and revolution, genocide and humanism, discovery and delusion, conformity and transgression, reading, writing, and telling. If the past is a “foreign country,” it is also a window onto the present, and sometimes a cautionary tale for the future.

Recently the quintet worked with bassoonist Mark Popkin in editing some exciting 19th-century chamber music which was then dedicated to each member. The ensemble is equally at home with its numerous "pop" arrangements by composers such as Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, and Duke Ellington.

Description: The Lyrique Quintette is the faculty woodwind chamber ensemble in residence at the University of Arkansas. All five are members of the music faculty at the University of Arkansas. A versatile troupe, the ensemble has been invited to perform throughout the U.S. and abroad. The members perform chamber music as chamber music should be heard--in an intimate, personal, and comfortable setting--bringing the performers and audience together as partners in the creation of an art form. The quintet's wide range of repertoire and dazzling performances make it a favorite of audiences of all ages. Repertoire spans many musical eras from the richness of the 16th-century Renaissance, to the boldness of 19th-century Romanticism, to works from some of today's most exciting international composers.

Title: Department of History | University of Arkansas

URL: https://fulbright.uark.edu/departments/history/
