Description: The Native American Heritage Commission (NAHC) is a nine-member body established in 1976, appointed by the Governor. Its responsibilities include identifying and documenting cultural resources such as places of religious or social importance to Native Americans, as well as known graves and cemeteries on private lands in California. The Commission is entrusted with preserving sacred sites and burials, managing Native American human remains and burial items, keeping an inventory of sacred sites on public lands, and evaluating existing administrative and legal safeguards concerning these sites.
