Description: The BankOn California program was created in 2008 to help consumers access basic financial services while avoiding costly alternative financial products by creating low-fee bank accounts, in addition to creating partnerships with community-based organizations to overcome the lack of trust in the banking system. The program was launched by the Governor’s Office with the help of financial institutions, city mayors, federal bank regulatory agencies, and community-based organizations. At its inception, the statewide program was a collaborative voluntary initiative to help develop and market low-fee bank accounts and educate Californians about the benefits of bank accounts.
