Description: Estonian Seminatural Community Conservation Association (ESCCA) is a nongovernmental organisation that was founded in 1997 in order to guarantee the maintenance of Estonian semi-natural communities. Semi-natural communities are traditional agricultural landscapes that include wooded meadows, alvars, floodplain meadows, coastal meadows, but also other meadows and pastures where grazing animals and mowing have been the only human activities. The ESCCA was brought into being due to the fact that the area of semi-natural communities has become marginal during the 20th century, consequently, the further existence of semi-natural communities as well as of species adapted to those conditions has become questionable. Through the maintenance of traditional rural landscapes ESCCA also supports the preservation of traditional village culture. The main activities of ESCCA include collecting information concerning semi-natural communities, organizing the protection and maintenance of those communities, and thirdly, introducing semi-natural communities to the larger audience.

Since that accident, many children with leukemia and other illnesses have been unable to receive sufficient medical care, due in part to serious economic trouble; many have also died from infectious disease due to poor hygiene. JCF, working closely with doctors in the affected areas, and in cooperation with medical professionals from Shinshu University and other institutions, has been involved in many humanitarian projects. In 2004, JCF expanded its support to include Iraq, a country that has seen a sharp increase in leukemia cases since the Gulf War. Subsequent economic sanctions and armed conflict in that region have led to shortages in medical care and to the loss of life.

NECU consolidates individuals for common action to protect the environment. Among NECU members are scientists, journalists, artists, students and other people who are willing to add their own effort to environmental protection. The organization has branches in a dozen of Ukrainian cities. NECU works to bring environmental consideration into the core of any decision. We aim to bring concerns of local population and experts to the politicians, to redesign strategies and projects. We work both to save nature, by maintaining and creating new protected areas, and to decrease human impact on environment, through policy changes in energy and transport sectors.

To date, the environmental situation in Russia is abysmal; in the environmental rankings, Russia ranks 106th, behind leaders in pollution, such as India and China. The reason for this is flawed environmental legislation and ignorance on the part of citizens. We raise the banner of struggle against the catastrophic ecological situation in the Russian Federation. We are fighting for legitimate laws to protect the rights of the people to health, clean air, land, and water.
