Description: The Action for Rural Women’s Empowerment (ARUWE) is a non-profit organization that works to improve the conditions of marginalized groups in Uganda, especially children and rural women farmers. ARUWE is a member of the National Association of Women organizations in Uganda (NAWOU) and is tasked with improving the livelihoods and welfare of women in terms of providing assistance and education on achieving economic empowerment, avoiding the transmission of HIV/AIDS, and attaining food security. This organization has an integrated program on health, water, sanitation and HIV/AIDS that focuses on health, hygiene, and sanitation as well as reproductive health.

Description: NewEnergy is a non-governmental organization founded in 1994 in the city of Tamale, and operates from four districts in the northern region of Ghana: the Tamale Municipality, Gushiegu Karaga, West Mamprusi, and Tolon Kumbungu. This organization’s main areas of focus include water and sanitation services and advocacy. NewEnergy is one of several partners working under the Ghaja Project, a five-year project with an integrated approach to improving access to income generating activities as well as affordable and sustainable energy options for rural, underserved communities in northern Ghana by utilizing the Jatropha plant, which is drought resistant with oils that can be used as fuel.

Title: Safe Water and AIDS Project (SWAP)

Description: The Safe Water and AIDS Project (SWAP) is a non- governmental organization based in Kisumu Kenya with the following objectives: improving the quality of life for people living with HIV/AIDS, preventing the leading causes of illnesses and mortality in children such as diarrhea and malaria, and helping to generate income for HIV positive women. SWAP, officially registered as an NGO in 2006, trains HIV positive groups of women to sell and market public health goods to their communities: such as hand soaps, diapers, detergents, drinking water, water purification tablets, feminine hygiene products, mosquito nets, as well as water treatment and storage products. The provision of capacity building and training programs is meant to provide vulnerable HIV positive women, who are many times ostracized for their illness, with income generating activities that ultimately empower communities with improved water sanitation and hygiene standards.
