October 2006

Mayor Villaraigosa recently returned from a 13-day trade mission to Asia that took him and a delegation of local business, non-profit and labor leaders to China, South Korea, and Japan.  Major announcements from the trade mission include:

  • L.A. tourism office opens in Beijing:  Los Angeles is the first city to open a tourism office in China, the fastest growing market for overseas travelers.  With the new office, L.A. is well-positioned to capture a significant share of the expected 50 million new Chinese who will travel to the United States by 2010.

  • More than $300 million in foreign investment headed to Koreatown: The Korean Trade and Cultural Center, called "Superblock ", the CGV Madang Theater Complex, the 3670 Wilshire Project, and a new Woori Bank branch are projects in development for this neighborhood of Los Angeles.

  • Historic River Restoration agreement signed:  Through the first-ever "Sister River Restoration Agreement," Seoul, South Korea will share the environmental knowledge and technology used to restore the Cheonggyecheon River with Los Angeles in an effort to restore the Los Angeles River, currently undergoing an 18-month master planning process.

  • "Made in LA" clothing sections opened in China and South Korea:  Prominent department stores in Shanghai and Seoul will devote significant space to selling clothing "Made in LA", serving as valuable entrée to the Asian market for L.A.-based designers while also promoting L.A.’s tourism industry.

  • "See My LA" campaign launched in Japan:  The "See My LA" campaign and travel sweepstakes will appear in more than 12,000 convenient stores throughout Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand through a unique partnership with FamilyMart, the second-largest convenient store chain in Japan.  The campaign highlights L.A.'s creative energy and visitor attractions.

The Los Angeles River and our Ports

The environment was a major theme on the Mayor’s trade mission to Asia.

In Shanghai, the Mayor announced the first-ever Pacific Ports Environmental Conference to be held in Los Angeles in December 2006.  Port cities throughout the Pacific Rim will come together to work to reduce emissions and improve air quality.  The ports of Los Angeles and Shanghai will take a leadership role in promoting environmentally friendly port operations.  For the entire press release, click here.

In Seoul, the Mayor signed the first-ever "Sister River Restoration" agreement.  Through the agreement, Seoul will share the environmental knowledge and technology used to revitalize its Cheonggyecheon River to inform the Los Angeles River Restoration master planning process which is currently underway. For the press release, click here.

The Mayor also delivered the keynote speech at the American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong on the shared responsibility of industrialized nations to reduce pollution and greenhouse gases.  For the entire speech, click here.

He also signed an air quality cooperation agreement with the Mayor of Busan.

Keep OurLA Safe
Honoring Officer Landon Dorris

On October 22, 2006, Los Angeles Police Department Officer Landon Dorris was killed in the line of duty. Mayor Villaraigosa spoke these words in honor of Officer Dorris:

Today my heavy heart, and the heavy hearts of every Angeleno, is with the family of Officer Landon Dorris.

Our hearts and our prayers are with his mother, with his fiancé, and with his two young boys, who are not yet old enough to fully understand that their father was a true hero.

Our hearts are also with each and every member of the Los Angeles Police Department, and particularly to the members of the Northeast Area Station, as we share in their sorrow for the loss of one of their own.

Today should remind all of us of the great sacrifices made and risks taken by the brave men and women of the LAPD in order to keep us safe.

It reminds us that our officers have dedicated their lives to the most noble of professions.

And it reminds us what a tremendous debt of gratitude we owe each and every member of the Los Angeles Police Department, who put their lives on the line every day.
