The Schoolhouse
Standing before parents, students, teachers and community leaders, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa unveiled a new vision for the Los Angeles Unified School District in a town hall-style meeting Wednesday evening. Based on months of research by Mayor Villaraigosa and his education team, "The Schoolhouse: A Framework to Give Every Child in LAUSD an Excellent Education," is a detailed policy framework for improving every school in the Los Angeles school district.

Mayor Villaraigosa and more than 3,000 volunteers take part in 60 service projects at the Day of Service in Watts. Mayor challenges Angelenos to serve Los Angeles, one community at a time. (Los Angeles, CA) - Challenging Angelenos to serve the City of Los Angeles one community at a time, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa participated in several of the 60 beautification and improvement projects at the Day of Service in Watts on Saturday, November 18, 2006. People from all over the City of Los Angeles are coming together to give a little love to Watts, said Mayor Villaraigosa. No matter where you live, we are all responsible for the communities that make up the City of Los Angeles. I want to challenge Angelenos to get involved in Day of Service campaigns and clean up the City of Los Angeles - one community at a time.
MAYOR VILLARAIGOSA ANNOUNCES HISTORIC BREAKTHROUGH ON THE EASTSIDE GOLD LINE
Mayor Villaraigosa, along with Los Angeles County Supervisor Gloria Molina, Los Angeles City Council member Jose Huizar and Metropolitan Transportation Authority Board members held a news conference today to announce the 1.7-mile tunnel breakthrough on the Eastside Gold Line Extension construction project. After having burrowed a 1.7 mile eastbound tunnel from First and Boyle to First and Lorena streets, Mayor Villaraigosa along with other elected officials and transit leaders celebrated the breakthrough and arrival of the massive tunnel boring machine used to build the Eastside Light Rail.
MAYOR VILLARAIGOSA LAUNCHES READY, SET, GOLD!
Promoting Los Angeles bid to become the site of the 2016 Summer Olympics, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa along with the Southern California Committee for the Olympic Games (SCCOG), today launched Ready, Set, Gold! Matching former Olympians with LAUSD school children, Ready, Set,Gold! will combine the excitement of Los Angeles Olympic bid with motivating children to set and reach their goals in the areas of fitness and health. Today, we are going to bridge healthy bodies and healthy minds, with physical and academic achievements, said Mayor Villaraigosa. We will use this program to combine the excitement of the Olympics and the importance of goal setting to motivate not just young people, but everyone in the community to set and reach their goals.
MAYOR VILLARAIGOSA ANNOUNCES $65 MILLION PENSION FUND INVESTMENT IN WORKFORCE HOUSING
Following the narrow defeat of Measure H, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced an innovative public-private commitment to create housing developments for middle-income families across the greater Los Angeles area. Investments will target housing affordable to Los Angeles middle-income workforce, including teachers, firefighters, and nurses. Mayor Villaraigosa was joined by executives from LA's largest public pension funds - Los Angeles City Employees Retirement System (LACERS); Los Angeles County Employee Retirement Association (LACERA); Los Angeles Department of Fire and Police Pensions (LAFPP) - to announce the commitment of a combined $65 million in Genesis Workforce Housing Fund II, a private equity real estate fund managed by Phoenix Realty Group that will create workforce housing developments targeted toward middle-income families across the greater Los Angeles area. If we want good schools and safe streets, we need to commit ourselves to making Los Angeles a place where a teacher or a policeman can afford to buy a house and raise a family. said Mayor Villaraigosa.
