Overview

  • China is the world's leading producer and consumer of a range of agricultural commodities.
  • It is the world's leading importer of soybeans and cotton, and a major exporter of corn, fruits, vegetables and aquaculture products.
  • Since the 1970s, China has increased the role of market forces in its economy and it has lowered import barriers. However, the government continues to intervene in agriculture to meet food security and price stability objectives.
  • As the incomes of China's 1.3 billion people continue to rise, demand for more and higher quality food products will grow, enhancing opportunities for U.S. agricultural exports.

ERS provides research, analysis, and information on China's agricultural policy, outlook, and trade to decisionmakers in the United States, China, and throughout the world.
