Current Initiatives

Shared Research Computing Services Pilot - Active - On Target, 9/13/10
This initiative provides researchers on UC campuses with access to highly capable, centralized, and cost-effective high-performance computing resources. The project goal is to maximize UC's competitive research position by providing PIs with computing resources with optimal service support levels while demonstrating that sharing resources lowers research computing costs across the University. More information for ITLC members is available on a members-only site: Access for campus members, and access for UCOP members.

E-mail Scoping - Active - On Target, 9/13/10
This study seeks to define options for UC locations to improve and lower the costs of UC e-mail services. Three categories of e-mail are being analyzed: student e-mail, administrative/clinical e-mail, and open source/low cost e-mail. More information for ITLC members is available on a members-only site: Access for campus members, and access for UCOP members.

Middleware Standards - Active - On Target, 9/13/10
An analysis of the feasibility and benefits of establishing a common UC middleware architecture is being conducted. A common middleware would enable locations to leverage systemwide technology resources within the context of campus-specific operational differences. More information for ITLC members is available on a members-only site: Access for campus members, and access for UCOP members.

Regional Data Center - Active - On Target, 9/13/10
The San Diego Supercomputer Center is being used as a shared regional co-location facility for UC campuses. This co-location initiative is intended to demonstrate that systems, servers, and storage may be housed more economically, effectively, and efficiently in a shared data center than in numerous local data centers. More information for ITLC members is available on a members-only site: Access for campus members, and access for UCOP members.
