Subject:  UC Campus Computing Cluster Survey
Date:  Tue, 13 Sep 2005 09:40:56 -0700

ITLC Members,

As discussed in last week's conference call, here is a description of the computing cluster survey that contains background on the October UC Research Cyberinfrastructure meeting, describing the motivation for this survey. I hope I have worded this in a manner that will be easy for you to use to solicit responses on your campus.

Could you help to gather this information for your campus?  A template that respondents can paste into an electronic mail message, along with their responses, follows at the end of this message.  The responses should be sent to Connie.Geraghty@ucop.edu by Monday, October 3, 2005.  We will provide copies of a summary of the responses to all respondents.

In February, 2005, UC's Information Technology leaders and Vice Chancellors for Research held a joint meeting to discuss UC’s "cyberinfrastructure” requirements for future research competitiveness. Meeting information can be found at: http://www.ucop.edu/irc/itlc/meetings/feb2005.html. These groups, in partnership with the California Institutes for Science and Innovation http://www.ucop.edu/california-institutes and the Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California (CENIC http://www.cenic.org/), are sponsoring a follow-on meeting at the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (CalIT2, http://www.calit2.net/) on October 10-11, 2005. .The goals for this meeting are the following:

  • Motivate NSF cyberinfrastructure funding opportunities and position UC to benefit from such opportunities
  • Identify current UC research computing infrastructure capabilities and best practices throughout UC
  • Understand strategic directions in UC research (and related requirements for cyberinfrastructure) and identify the drivers for UC-wide collaboration
  • Develop an architecture or blueprint for UC research cyberinfrastructure
  • Forge the internal and external UC partnerships required for success.

For more information about the October 10-11, 2005 meeting, please see the meeting agenda and related materials at http://www.ucop.edu/irc/itlc/cyber.htm.

In order to begin to understand current research computing capabilities, we are compiling an inventory of campus computing clusters, including the following list of items.

  • Cluster Name
  • Contact name, electronic mail address, etc.
  • Research area
  • # of nodes
  • # of processors per node
  • Type of processor and GHz
  • Operating System
  • Interconnect
  • Transmission speed of the connection to the Internet / campus network
  • Source of system support (e.g., within the research group, departmental or campus support group)
  • Notable local applications developed (optional)
  • Open Source applications used (optional)
  • Commercial applications used (optional)

The responses should be sent to Connie.Geraghty@ucop.edu by Monday, October 3, 2005.  We will provide copies of a summary of the responses to all respondents.

Please contact David Walker (dhwalker@ucdavis.edu) if you have any questions.
