Outlook Tip of the Month: Turning an E-mail into a Calendar Appointment

Date: July 6, 2007

From: Tara Brant, Manager, IR&C; Technology Service Desk

Outlook offers a simple and time-saving trick, allowing you to turn e-mail messages into calendar appointments. For example, you might receive an agenda for a meeting next week. Not only do you want to put the meeting in your calendar, but you also want to add the agenda to the calendar notes without having to cut and paste it in. This is easy to do:

  1. Left click on the e-mail message in the Inbox that contains the appointment information.
  2. Drag the e-mail to the Calendar tab. This action creates an appointment with the body of the e-mail in the notes field.
  3. Fill out the dates, time, etc., for the appointment.
  4. Save and close. You are done! The e-mail is now an appointment in your calendar.
