IR&C Spam and Virus Protection Services

October 9, 2003

As of October 15, IR&C; will initiate a new spam and virus protection service for UCOP. This means that IR&C; will use software to scan incoming e-mail messages to UCOP accounts so as to: tag messages, thus indicating to you whether or not the message is likely to be spam, and clean virus-infected e-mail attachments or, if necessary, delete them before delivery of the message. Details about the service are provided on the IR&C; Web site at:

http://www.ucop.edu/irc/services/email.html

To take full advantage of the spam-tagging service, you should use tools in your e-mail program (such as Eudora or Outlook) to direct, or filter, most spam messages into a special folder where you may review and delete them. This greatly reduces the amount of spam mixed among legitimate messages in your inbox. Your departmental PC coordinator may assist you with configuring the filters. We are providing training for the coordinators between now and October 15. In addition, instructions for desktop filtering are posted at:

http://www.ucop.edu/irc/services/emailspam.html

You also may contact IR&C;'s Desktop Computing Services at pchelp@ucop.edu or 987-0457 for further assistance.

IR&C; continually will seek to improve its spam and virus scanning services, as well as other e-mail services. Please do not hesitate to send suggestions to Desktop Computing Services Manager Patrimpas Prapuolenis at 987-0447 or .
