Spam Update

July 6, 2004

To: UCOP Personnel
From: Patrick Collins, Director, IR&C Information and Communication Services

IR&C continues to seek effective solutions for reducing the amount of spam
we receive at UCOP. As part of this overall effort, we have decided to stop
delivering e-mail messages sent from certain blacklisted e-mail servers,
known as open relays, beginning Wednesday, July 7, 2004. We expect this
change to result in a significant reduction of spam in UCOP e-mail boxes.

In rare instances, legitimate e-mail is sent through open relays. We are
addressing these cases by sending a brief, automatic reply to senders whose
e-mail is rejected. The reply will alert them that their message was not
delivered and direct them to a Web site that provides a full explanation.

Please direct any questions or concerns you may have to IR&C Desktop
Computing Services at pchelp@ucop.edu or 987-0457.
