6 E-mail
From: Paul Weiss, Director, IR&C Technology Support Services
Everyone hates spam but you can do something about it! We'd like
to remind you that if you use Eudora 6 for e-mail, you can filter
messages according to your personal definition of spam. What happens
is you actually "train" Eudora to recognize the types of messages
you consider spam or "junk" and those you consider legitimate. Here's
how:
-- When a spam message
arrives in your In box
, highlight it, open the Message drop down menu (or
right click on the highlighted message), and click on Junk.
Eudora then moves the message to the Junk folder.
-- When a legitimate message
arrives in your Junk folder
, highlight it, open the Message drop down menu (or
right click on the highlighted message), and click on Not
Junk Eudora then moves the message to the In box.
Over a few days of training, Eudora learns to categorize incoming
messages based on various characteristics (i.e., subject, sender,
key words) and drops into the Junk folder those messages you are
likely to consider spam.
Stay vigilant though! The spammers are smart and use the same tools
to figure out what messages are most likely to get through the filters.
Regular training refines the accuracy of Eudora's spam filtering.
--Legitimate messages occasionally will land in your Junk folder.
You should review your Junk folder daily so you don't
miss an important message erroneously tagged as Junk. Mark
legitimate messages as "Not Junk."
--Spam periodically will appear in your In box. Be sure to mark
it as Junk--don't just delete it.
--If you have questions, consult with your departmental PC coordinator.
While you are busy training Eudora, IR&C is doing behind-the-scenes
work to enhance the spam filtering process. We use server-based
tools to assign scores to incoming messages and indicate the likelihood
that recipients will consider the message spam. Eudora compares
this score with the one you develop by training Eudora, and uses
the highest score to filter spam into the Junk folder. As more tools
become available, IR&C will update our spam filtering services
and keep you informed as well.
