Saving Energy at the Computer

June 10, 2009

As part of the UCOP sustainability program, IR&C is implementing an energy savings initiative to put networked PCs in standby mode after 20 minutes of inactivity. In standby or “sleep” mode, power is cut off from unused computer resources, except for those needed to resume normal operations. With this simple effort, UCOP can save about 25-34 metric tons of carbon monoxide and $6,500 - $9,500 a year.

The Black Screen
Standby mode means your screen will appear black, and you won’t see your screensaver. It’s easy to “wake up” the PC. Just touch a key or move your mouse. Then re-enter your computer login password.

Roll Out
PCs will be migrated into the standby mode process on a department-by-department basis. The TechDesk will work with departments to finalize details and to communicate with staff beforehand. For technical reasons, Macs will not be included in the initiative at this time.

No Substitute for Power Off
Since standby mode still consumes some energy, turn off both your computer and monitor when you leave work for the day.

Go Green!
By implementing standby mode, UCOP will use energy more wisely, save money, and contribute towards a more sustainable future. It’s something we can be proud of. Thanks for your support.
