Re:        Restoral of E-mail System

The UCOP e-mail system has been restored after yesterday's failure and, as of 7:00 a.m. Tuesday, is operational with four caveats: (1) service will be sporadic today, (2) some people will receive duplicate e-mail messages, (3) some incoming messages may have been impacted, and (4) you are advised to resend some outgoing messages. Please read the following message carefully for further details.

Sporadic Service : E-mail service will be sporadic throughout the morning because we are metering access to the server while it recovers a day's worth of transactions.

Duplicate Messages : People who have stored e-mail messages on both the server and their computers will receive duplicate versions of e-mail messages. You may safely delete the duplicates. Otherwise, contact your departmental PC Coordinator for assistance in cleaning up your inbox.

Incoming Messages : Unfortunately, incoming e-mail messages received by the e-mail system between 1:00 and 10:45 a.m. on Monday, December 13-but not received by your computer- may have been permanently lost . This is because the system was restored using the most recent backup copy, which occurred at 1:00 a.m. Monday. Messages received after 10:45 a.m. were queued and you will receive them today.

Outgoing Messages : It is recommended that you resend any outgoing messages sent between 10:00 a.m. Monday and 7:00 a.m. Tuesday. For people using Eudora, this means you should open your Eudora outbox, sort by date, individually highlight messages sent after 10:00 a.m. December 13, go to the Messages menu, select Send Again, and then send the message. (Messages sent before 10:00 a.m. Monday were distributed.) Please contact your departmental PC Coordinator for assistance with resending messages in other e-mail programs.

We apologize for the business disruption caused by the e-mail system outage, which was the result of a significant hardware storage failure. Please contact the Desktop Computing Services helpdesk at 987-0457 if you have further concerns.
