New Network Access Security Measures

August 16, 2007

To: UCOP Community
From: Michael Shannon, Director, IR&C; Technology Support Services

Effective August 20, as an additional measure to secure the UCOP network from malicious attacks, IR&C; will begin blocking selected inbound network communications protocols.

As a result, individuals will not be able to access files, databases, and other UCOP resources from home or other external locations unless a virtual private network (VPN) is installed on their computer. VPN services may only be installed on computers owned and managed by UCOP, which have been provided appropriate security protections.

Please note that access to the Outlook e-mail and calendars via Outlook Web Access (OWA) does not require use of the VPN service and is unaffected by the security block.

UC campuses, other universities, and business partners that have been provided legitimate access to UCOP resources are not being blocked and will continue to have access to these resources.

If you -- or an organization with which you conduct University business -- have any problems accessing resources from external locations, please contact the Technology Service Desk at (510) 987-0457 or TechDesk@ucop.edu during business hours. After hours, please contact (510) 987-0349 or helpdesk@ucop.edu.

Thank you for your cooperation in securing the UCOP computing environment.
