UCOP Faked E-mail Messages

March 3, 2004

To: UCOP Personnel

From: Patrick Collins, Director, IR&C Information and Communication Services

UCOP personnel are receiving e-mail messages that contain viruses but look
as though they were sent from a legitimate UCOP e-mail account. These
messages are faking or "spoofing" UCOP addresses such as
"management@ucop.edu," or "administrator@ucop.edu." The subjects of the
messages refer to UCOP e-mail accounts. Examples are "Notify about your
e-mail account utilization," and "Email account utilization warning."

Please do not open the attachments but instead delete both the message and
the attachment. (Deleting an e-mail message does not necessarily delete the
attachment.) IR&C is working to address the cause of this attack and will
provide more information later.

If you opened an attachment to one of these e-mails, please contact your
departmental PC coordinator immediately.

Please submit your questions, comments, and suggestions at feedback.html
