Spam/Virus Scanning and Other E-mail Related Services

August 20, 2003

Over the last few months, IR&C; has been preparing a multi-phase project to enhance spam scanning, virus protection, and other services related to e-mail and calendaring. The first phase of the project — to be launched in October — will improve how UCOP handles spam and viruses. For the spam component, we will take a two-pronged approach used successfully elsewhere: while we enhance protections for everyone on the UCOP server, we also will provide you with tools to manage spam in a manner that fits your personal work style. Detailed information will be provided later about the components of the first project phase.

The services addressed in the project were determined through a survey we conducted earlier this year in which we asked departments to prioritize service improvements. Many of your departmental PC coordinators responded to the survey and identified spam and virus scanning as the most urgent needs. Subsequent phases will address e-mail over the Web, secure transmission of e-mail, and integrated e-mail and electronic calendaring on desktop systems and mobile devices, such as PDAs.

We will keep you informed as we proceed. David Walker, Interim Director of Enterprise Information Technology Services, has the lead on the overall project. Please don't hesitate to contact David or Kristine Hafner with suggestions or concerns.
