I am pleased to announce that Paul Weiss will assume the position of Director, Enterprise Information Technology Services (EITS), in Information Resources and Communications (IR&C;), effective March 22, 2004. This new position, created as a result of a reorganization of IR&C; in the summer of 2003, provides leadership for the design and operation of IR&C;'s technology and infrastructure platforms as well as the development, operation, and support of UC-wide enterprise systems such as benefits, retirement, and student systems. Working in close collaboration with the IR&C; management team and with UCOP department managers, Paul will play a key role in developing future IR&C; technology priorities and strategies.
Paul has over twenty-two years of experience in information technology management. He is currently Senior Director for Technology Infrastructure at Commerce One, a software company specializing in e-commerce solutions. Paul has managed the design, implementation, and support for Commerce One's global technology infrastructure. He joined the 500 employee start-up company and led the IT organization that designed and implemented the technology plan required to support the company's growth to 3,700 employees and 40 offices worldwide in one year. He also directed the integration of 15 different companies acquired during a one-year period into a single team and a unified technology infrastructure. During his tenure at Commerce One, Paul has provided leadership for the hosting of customers' mission critical applications and oversight for network operations and security, help desk support, and data center operations.
Prior to joining Commerce One, Paul spent nine years at Pacific Bell Directory as Manager of Network Engineering and then Director of Technology Operations Support. He also was a consultant and Chief Design Engineer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Principal Instructor at the Digital Equipment Corporation. Paul is a graduate of UC Berkeley and is delighted to be rejoining the University of California community. Please join me in welcoming Paul to IR&C.;
I would also like to express my sincere appreciation to David Walker, Director of Advanced Technologies, IR&C;, who stepped in as interim EITS Director in June 2003 to help implement IR&C;'s reorganization and focus on service delivery. David remains an integral member of the IR&C; management team and will, once again, direct his full attention to strategic IR&C; and UC-wide initiatives.
