Daylight Savings Time Error in Outlook Calendar

January 10, 2007

To: UCOP Community
From: Michael Shannon, Manager, IR&C Communication Services

In August 2005, the United States Congress passed the Energy Policy Act, which changes the start- and end-dates for daylight saving time. When this law goes into effect in 2007, daylight savings time will start three weeks earlier than before (2:00 a.m. on the second Sunday in March), and will end one week later (2:00 a.m. on the first Sunday in November).

The Outlook calendar is already taking into account the daylight savings time change-although incorrectly: Your appointments and reminders in the Outlook calendar for the weeks of March 11, 2007 - April 1, 2007, and October 28, 2007 - November 4, 2007, are appearing one hour earlier than they should. "All Day" events are spanning two days because these events are associated with 24 specific hours, rather than an individual date.

Microsoft has stated that a fix will be released in January. Until the fix is installed, please be aware that your appointments during the timeframe mentioned above are off by an hour. Do not correct the appointment times because after the fix is installed they will be incorrect again. We will let you know when the problem has been resolved.
