Information about the Conficker Worm

Date: March 31, 2009

To: UCOP Community
From: Tara Brant, Manager, IR&C; Technology Service Desk

Many news outlets, including 60 Minutes, have reported that a computer worm, called Conficker, will be activated on April 1, 2009. While the Conficker worm is a serious issue, security analysts do not believe that anything in particular will happen on April 1. Conficker takes advantage of a known vulnerability for which patches have been issued. The TechDesk regularly takes preventive measures to stop Conficker and other malware by updating PC systems during the monthly Microsoft updates. Thus, UCOP computer systems that have received security updates are not likely to be infected by Conficker. Learn more about the Conficker Worm.

We strongly recommend that you update your home PC systems with all current Microsoft/anti-virus updates before April 1. You can find out more information on how to protect your home system.
