Cellular Recycling Drive Reminder

September 11, 2006

To: UCOP Community

From: Michael Shannon, Manager, IR&C Communication Services

Communication Services would like to remind you that our second annual Cellular Recycling Drive will begin the week of September 11, and we look forward to receiving your donations of cellular phones and accessories at the designated drop-off areas.

Before you drop off your donations, we’d like to remind you to remove any personal information that you’ve stored in your phone. Security is a concern and protecting your personal information and data is vital. So please remember to delete all phone book entries, speed dialing, and other personal information from your cell phone before donating to Communication Services. In particular, Smartphones and other PDA cellular phones contain sensitive, personal, and corporate information, such as email and text messages. Users can go to the following web site for directions on performing a Hard Wipe. (http://www.wirelessrecycling.com/home/data_eraser/default.asp)

Select the cell phone manufacturer, model, and cellular carrier. The site will provide instructions on performing a Hard Wipe for Smartphones, PDA cellular phones, and all other cellular phones. If you should encounter any difficulty with the Hard Wipe process, Communication Services will assist. Please contact us at 987-0011.

Re: Second Annual Cell Phone Recycling Drive

UCOP Communication Services is pleased to host the second annual cellular phone recycling drive. This time we are partnering with the Verizon Wireless Hopeline Program (http://www.verizonwireless.com/hopeline).

Last year’s cell phone recycling drive resulted in the donation of 226 cellular phones and batteries to the PaceButler Corporation. Together we raised over $500, which was equally disbursed between Action Against Hunger and UNICEF and earmarked for the hunger crisis in Niger.

This year, we will donate equipment for charities a little closer to home. The Hopeline Program will take wireless phones, accessories, and batteries and either refurbish them or recycle them in an environmentally safe way and donate them to Bay Area agencies that assist victims of domestic violence.

Recycling cellular phones continues to be an important issue. Cell phones contain potentially dangerous materials such as lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic. If cell phones are not disposed of properly, these materials will eventually leach into the soil and groundwater. Recycling phones and reducing demand for the materials used in cell phones, may decrease our negative impact on the environment, including global warming, and improve the quality of our lives. So gather up those phones and accessories at your house and the office and bring them in!
