Anti-Spam Measures To Be Implemented

February 5 , 2007

From: Michael Shannon

In our ongoing effort to combat spam, IR&C; is pleased to announce implementation of new anti-spam measures beginning February 8, 2007. As I announced in December (http://www.ucop.edu/irc/announce/spamreduction_tool.html), over the past couple of months IR&C; has been testing spam filtering hardware, which we are now ready to deploy. While no solution will completely eliminate spam, we expect the new filtering service, called Tumbleweed MailGate, to greatly reduce the amount of spam we receive at UCOP.

What's New
Tumbleweed's spam recognition capabilities are very sophisticated and more accurate than our previous spam filtering process. In addition, Tumbleweed allows you to review all your spam messages, if you wish, to ensure you do not miss any legitimate e-mail that might have been tagged as junk by mistake

What You Need to Do
When we launch the new service, you will receive an e-mail from "mailadmins@ucop.edu." You should open the message, click on the Web address provided, and then log into your Tumbleweed spam report, using your regular computer log-in password. (The username will be filled in for you.)

You will regularly receive an e-mail that will provide a link to your spam report. You may review the messages listed in the report and reclassify them as you see fit. Overall, managing the Tumbleweed spam report should require minimal effort on your part.

For more information about the service, including instructions on managing the spam report, see the Web page at http://www.ucop.edu/irc/services/spamfilter.html. If you have questions, you may contact the IR&C; Technology Service Desk at TechDesk@ucop.edu or 987-0457.
