Upgrade for Acrobat Reader

March 31, 2008

To: UCOP Community
From: Tara Brant, Manager, IR&C Technology Service Desk

Beginning April 2, IR&C will update Adobe Acrobat Reader 8.1.2 on all centrally managed desktops to address several known security issues. The update will occur automatically for all PCs. You will not notice anything taking place, and you should not experience any changes. Questions and answers about the upgrade are provided below:

Who will receive this update?
All PCs connected to the UCOP network will automatically download and install the update. You do not need to reboot your system for the update to occur. However, people who use Mac systems will need to update their systems manually; the patch for Macs may be downloaded here. Contact the IR&C Technology Service Desk or your departmental PC Coordinator if you need assistance.

When will this process start?
Starting Wednesday, April 2, all PCs connected to the network will automatically download the update. Desktop or laptop computers will not receive the update until they are connected to the UCOP network. Laptops may be brought in and connected to the UCOP network at any time on or after April 2 to receive the update.

What does this update do?
It fixes a vulnerability in version 8.1.1 More information about the update can be found here.

What if I use Adobe Acrobat Professional version 8?
IR&C is testing an update for Adobe Acrobat Professional 8 for compatibility with UCOP software. Adobe is working on an update for people still using Acrobat Professional version 7.0.9.

If you experience any problems with this upgrade, please contact the Technology Service Desk at 987-0457 or TechDesk@ucop.edu.
