December 17, 2007

To: UCOP Community
From: Tara Brant, Manager, IR&C Technology Service Desk

Beginning December 19, IR&C; will update Adobe Acrobat Reader 8.1 on all centralized desktops to address several known security issues. The update will occur automatically for all PCs. You should not experience any changes. Questions and answers about the upgrade are provided below.

Who will receive this update?
All PCs connected to the UCOP network will automatically download and install the update. You do not need to reboot your system for the update to occur. Users with Mac systems though will need to update their systems manually; the patch for Macs may be downloaded here. Contact the IR&C; Technology Service Desk or your departmental PC Coordinator if you need assistance.

When will this process start?
Starting Wednesday, December 19, all PCs connected to the network will automatically download the update. Desktop or laptop computers will not receive the update until they are connected to the UCOP network. Laptops may be brought in and connected to the UCOP network at any time on or after the 19th to receive the update.

What does this update do?
It fixes a vulnerability in version 8.1. More information about the update can be found here.

How will this update affect my PC?
You should not notice any changes.

What if I use Adobe Acrobat Professional version 8?
IR&C; is testing an update for Adobe Acrobat Professional 8 for compatibility with UCOP software. We will announce that update shortly when the testing is complete, Adobe is working on an update for people still using Acrobat Professional version 7.0.9.

If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact your departmental PC Coordinator or the IR&C; Technology Service Desk at 987-0457 or TechDesk@ucop.edu.
