UCOP Department of Academic Initiatives

NOTE: Some of the functions formerly in Academic Initiatives have been moved to the Educational Relations department -- we will soon modify the web page to reflect those changes.

The Department of Academic Initiatives develops innovative academic programs across the University and collaborates with K-12 and the other California college and university systems in higher education programs across the state. Academic Initiatives promotes the academic uses of instructional and informational technologies to provide increased access to learning opportunities and to enable faculty development of new applications for teaching and research. Academic Initiatives also extends the impact of the University of California through UC Centers in Washington, D.C. and Sacramento and by promoting the interests of UC Extension at the system level.

What's New
  • The University of California Center Sacramento (UCCS) was established in 2003 as an innovative 5-year pilot program providing opportunities to University of California undergraduate and graduate students to intern in the offices of state elected officials, state agencies, and other policy-making organizations, to study as a cohort, and to live in Sacramento each quarter or semester. UCCS Scholar Interns combine an intensive course of study in public policy with guided internship and research opportunities.  This summer, UCCS is welcoming its sixth cohort into three academic tracks (Environment, Journalism, and General).  For additional information, visit: http://uccs.universityofcalifornia.edu or write 2UCCS@ucop.edu [5/17/05]
  • New Sonoma State, Sac State, and UC Davis Joint Doctoral Program to Address Need for Education Leaders. Three Northern California universities are launching a new doctoral program to help meet the need for leadership in California's schools and community colleges -- especially those in the state's northern region. The program in educational leadership, geared to working professionals, is offered by Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park; California State University, Sacramento; and the University of California, Davis. It will lead to a Doctor of Education, or Ed.D., degree awarded jointly by the UC and CSU systems. [more] [12/2/04]
  • Joint Doctoral Program in Educational Leadership at CSU Hayward, San Francisco State, San Jose State, and UC Berkeley approved. This program, which began in Summer 2003, prepares reform-oriented leaders committed to improving the quality of schools in metropolitan areas and rural districts. Four distinguished universities combine expertise and resources to offer this Ed.D.: UC Berkeley and the California State Universities at Hayward, San Jose, and San Francisco. The unique and innovative curriculum provides students with a strong academic foundation in urban education and educational leadership. A three-year course of study offers the professional preparation and experiences necessary to ensure that graduates are prepared to address effectively the challenges facing urban school districts in America. Graduates are qualified to fill positions in urban district offices, county offices of education, and other school consortia. The class schedule is designed to accommodate the needs of working professionals. [more] [11/19/2003]
