AFTRA Magazine Wins 2011 ILCA Excellence Award

Posted July 27, 2011

AFTRA Magazine has won a General Excellence Award from the International Labor Communications Association (ILCA) in the International and National Publications category. AFTRA Magazine, a quarterly national member publication with a circulation of approximately 75,000, won Third Award. First Award went to the American Federation of Teachers, and Second Award was given to the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. AFTRA previously received awards from ILCA in 2010 for AFTRA Magazine and AFTRA.com.

“I am very pleased AFTRA Magazine has received this award,” said Ed Fry, AFTRA New York Local member and National Editorial Board Chair. “Part of the achievement here, aside from the award itself, is that AFTRA Magazine is honored in this category alongside two titan unions of the Labor Movement: the American Federation of Teachers and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.”

Fry praised the publication saying, “With the professional excellence of Christopher de Haan, National Director of Communications, and Leslie Simmons, National Manager of Communications, and their staff, we have built on the editorial foundation provided by member John Henning and staff consultant Dick Moore, utilized appropriate advertising to defray costs and kept the focus on timely events and the work of the membership. This has allowed AFTRA Magazine to stay relevant, informative and award-winning.”

This year, the 2011 ILCA’s National Convention will be held in Seattle, September 21-24. The ILCA's annual Awards Banquet will take place at 6:00 p.m. Saturday, September 24 at the Seattle Westin, the site of AFTRA’s 63rd National Convention, which recently concluded on July 23.

The ILCA, founded in 1955, is the professional organization of labor communicators in North America. ILCA membership is open to national, regional, and local union publications and to media productions affiliated with the AFL-CIO, Change to Win and the CLC, as well as to associate members not affiliated with those bodies. The ILCA's several hundred members produce publications with a total circulation in the tens of millions. The ILCA came into being as a byproduct of the merger of the American Federation of Labor and the Congress of Industrial Organizations on December 5, 1955.
