SERVICE TO PUBLISH SCHOLARLY PAPERS AND MATERIALS RESULTING FROM UC SEMINAR SERIES ONLINE

OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Office of Scholarly Communication at the University of California today (Tuesday) announced new services that provide greater access to UC scholarship. Using the new seminar series feature of the eScholarship Repository (http://repositories.cdlib.org/escholarship/), UC faculty can publish seminar papers and give their seminars, lecture series, and colloquia a lasting and highly visible presence on the Internet.

The eScholarship Repository publishing platform helps UC faculty capture and preserve the scholarship that is often lost at the conclusion of a semester or quarter-long seminar series. In addition, the repository enhances the visibility of these important scholarly materials and makes them freely available to a wider audience.

Using the new seminar series service, seminar conveners can post a schedule of speakers, list lecture topics, upload the full text of papers, and use seminar-specific mailing lists to distribute information about the series. After the seminar is complete, the papers are maintained as a complete series. Users can search the full text of papers within a series, or search across all content in the eScholarship Repository, which includes pre-publication materials, journals and peer-reviewed series.

The seminar series service has already found a following among some UC faculty, including Jesse Fried, a law professor at UC Berkeley. "After trying the seminar software, I am eagerly looking forward to using it in the law and economics workshop this fall," he said.

Fried's interest in the seminar series service was echoed by Richard J. Gilbert, chairman of the economics department at UC Berkeley. "This is an exciting new product, and I am looking forward to using it," he said.

Catherine Candee, director of publishing and strategic initiatives and manager of the eScholarship program, said the seminar series service was developed in response to faculty requests to extend the eScholarship Repository's publishing capabilities.

" The faculty interest in UC-supported mechanisms like this is unmistakable," Candee said. "More than 160 UC departments and research units are already publishing and distributing scholarly materials through the eScholarship Repository, and more than 670,000 full-text papers and articles have been downloaded."

UC faculty interested in joining the eScholarship Repository and using the new seminar series service can find more information on the eScholarship Repository Web site at: http://repositories.cdlib.org/escholarship/about.html.
