Citrus Production and Use

  • U.S. citrus bearing acreage:
       2003/04: 985,300 acres (oranges, 763,100)
       2004/05: 945,700 acres (oranges, 737,600)
       2005/06: 877,700 acres (oranges, 685,100)

  • Farm value of citrus production:
       2003/04: $2.485 billion (oranges, $1.774 billion)
       2004/05: $2.303 billion (oranges, $1.475 billion)
       2005/06: $2.680 billion (oranges, $1.766 billion)

  • U.S. citrus production:
       2003/04: 16.360 million tons (oranges, 12.872 million)
       2004/05: 11.574 million (oranges, 9.252 million)
       2005/06: 11.584 million (oranges, 8.898 million)

  • Citrus production, by State, 2005/06:
         FL – 7.832 million tons
         CA – 3.290 million tons
         TX– 0.277 million tons
         AZ– 0.185 million tons

  • Citrus production by crop, 2005/06:

         Oranges: 22 percent fresh; 78 percent processed (mostly juice)
         Grapefruit: 49 percent fresh; 51 percent processed
         Lemons: 70 percent fresh; 30 percent processed
         Tangerines: 69 percent fresh; 31 percent processed

  • U.S. fresh-market share of production, by State, 2005/06:
          FL – oranges 5 percent, grapefruit 36 percent, tangerines 66 percent
          CA – oranges 72 percent, grapefruit 88 percent, tangerines 75 percent,
          lemons 72 percent
          AZ – oranges 52 percent, grapefruit 100 percent, tangerines 65 percent,
          lemons 57 percent
          TX – oranges 79 percent, grapefruit 62 percent

          2003/04: 1.467 billion single-strength equivalent (sse) gallons

  • U.S. per capita use of fresh citrus:
         2004: 10.78 lbs oranges, 4.14 lbs grapefruit, 2.76 lbs tangerines/tangelos,
         3.12 lbs lemons
         2005: 11.40 lbs oranges, 2.65 lbs grapefruit, 2.49 lbs tangerines/tangelos,
         2.94 lbs lemons
         2006: 9.82 lbs oranges, 2.30 lbs grapefruit, 2.64 lbs tangerines/tangelos,

       2005/06 average: $13.87/box fresh, $5.39/box processed
    Lemons:
       2003/04 average: $14.19/box fresh, $-4.91/box processed*
       2004/05 average: $18.00/box fresh, $-5.03/box processed

    Tangerines:

* Equivalent on-tree price is calculated at the on-tree level minus production costs. In some cases, this results in negative returns.
